Students’ Perceptions of The National Science Olympiad (OSN) Coaching Program in The Earth Science Field at SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung

The National Science Olympiad (OSN) in the Earth Science field is an interdisciplinary science competition that
assesses students’ understanding of earth and space phenomena. The broad and in-depth complexity of Earth
Science materials requires the implementation of a structured coaching program at the school level. The
implementation of this coaching program needs to be examined from the perspective of students as
participants. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the National Science Olympiad (OSN) Earth
Science coaching program in term of cognitive, affective, and conative aspects. The research employed a
qualitative descriptive method with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and
documentation. The research was conducted at SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung. The results show that, in general,
students have positive perceptions of the Earth Science OSN coaching program. From a cognitive perspective,
students understand the components and processes of the coaching program. From an affective perspective,
students perceive the program as providing meaningful, well-structured, and collaborative learning
experiences, and as enhancing their understanding of Earth Science concepts. From a conative perspective,
students demonstrate a relatively high level of commitment and involvement in the coaching activities, as well
as motivation to pursue further studies related to the field of Earth Science. However, several challenges remain,
including limited coaching intensity prior to the competition, unequal opportunities for field practice visits
among participants, and monitoring and evaluation activities that have not yet been optimally implemented.
