Abstract

This research uses a descriptive approach with quantitative methods. Quantitative data were obtained from questionnaires distributed to school dropouts and through in-depth interviews to clarify the causal factors of high school dropouts in Way Pengubuan District. The results show an interaction of two main factors. First, the accessibility factor functions as a "daily burden"; not because of bad roads, but due to service failure (76% no public transportation) and spatial failure (40% no local high school). This forces high costs (87% > Rp5,000) and long travel times (85% > 30 minutes), which cause chronic lateness (82%). Second, the socio-economic factor acts as a "fragile foundation", marked by structural poverty (93% income < Rp2.000.000) and low parental education (69% ≤ Junior High School). This interaction is exacerbated by the failure of the support system: 74% do not receive stable social assistance, family support is passive, and the community is apathetic. In this vacuum, child marriage (experienced by 57% of respondents) and a negative social environment (61%) become the main exit routes. Dropping out of school is concluded to be an inevitable result of accumulated structural vulnerabilities.
