Sekaran Urban Village, Gunungpati District, Semarang City, has experienced urbanization dynamics around Universitas Negeri Semarang, characterized by an increase in settlement area, while Gunungpati also serves conservation and water infiltration functions. This condition warrants investigation to understand the relationship between settlement expansion and the economic transformation of the local community. This study aims to analyze urbanization patterns and their relationship with community economic transformation. The study used a quantitative approach with spatial analysis. Data were obtained through observations, spatial datasets, and questionnaires administered to 68 respondents. Settlement expansion was analyzed based on distribution patterns and spatial changes during 2014–2024, while economic transformation was examined through changes in employment and the structure of economic sectors. Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis and Nearest Neighbour Analysis were used to identify settlement patterns, while Spearman rank correlation was used to test relationships between variables within each respondent group. The results showed that settlements exhibited a clustered and expanding pattern, particularly around UNNES. Meanwhile, economic transformation was characterized by a shift in employment from agricultural to nonagricultural sectors. Positive and significant correlations were found among local residents (r = 0.369; Sig. = 0.027) and students (r = 0.414; Sig. = 0.019), with relatively weak to moderate relationship strengths. These findings indicate an association between settlement expansion and economic transformation but do not establish a direct causal relationship.
