Abstract

Springs play a vital role in meeting the community’s water needs and maintaining hydrological balance. However, changes in land use can threaten recharge areas and the sustainability of springs. This study aims to analyze land-use changes, biophysical characteristics, and the development of priority spring protection zones in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study employs a descriptive quantitative approach based on remote sensing and GIS, using Landsat 8 OLI imagery from 2020 and 2025, as well as biophysical parameters and spring distribution data. Land-use change analysis was conducted using LUCI, while drought vulnerability was analyzed using the SMCE  method involving scoring, weighting, and weighted overlay as the basis for identifying priority spring protection areas. The research results show a LUCI value of 22.88%, with the expansion of residential areas as the primary land-use change. The biophysical characteristics of Sleman Regency are dominated by flat to gently sloping terrain, Regosol soil, and relatively high rainfall. A drought vulnerability analysis indicates that the “not vulnerable” class is the dominant class, covering an area of 43,588.78 ha. These results form the basis for the development of a spring protection area, which is divided into a core protection zone, an inner protection zone, and a buffer protection zone. These three zones are designed to support spring protection, regulate land use, and conserve water recharge areas to ensure the sustainability of water resources in Sleman Regency.
